Zhongshan Foreign Languages Institute
was founded by a group of professors of Nanjing University and
Nanjing Normal University with the support of some eminent figures
in the educational circles of Jiangsu Province and Nanjing
Municipality. It is a private institution of higher education,
whose establishment was officially approved by Nanjing Municipal
Education Bureau and Jiangsu Provincial Education Department and
is kept on file in China's Ministry of Education and whose
objective is to train high-level applied foreign language
professionals. During the past ten years since its establishment,
the Institute has trained more than 60,000 foreign language
professionals, and has been awarded several honorary titles such
as "Advanced Educational Unit Run by the Private Sector"
and "Model School Run by the Private Sector."
The Institute consists of three
parts: the division for the full-time junior college students
working for a diploma, the division for secondary education and
the training division. The division for the full-time junior
college students working for a diploma is located at a busy street
of Jiangning District providing for products of science,
technology, electronics and culture, where there are several buses
going to downtown Nanjing or Nanjing Railroad Station. The campus
of the institute occupies an area of 160 mu(26.3 acres) with a
floorage of 30000 square metres. All kinds of advanced facilities are
provided, such as classrooms with the closed-circuit television
device, multimedia language teaching system, special computer
room, lecture halls, libraries, dormitories, cafeterias,
bathhouses, a big playground with 400-metre tracks, a swimming
pool and various grounds for ball games. With its beautiful
surroundings and first-rate facilities, it is an ideal place for
studying. The training division runs year-round intensive and
remedial courses in English and Japanese for the self-study junior
college and undergraduate students and for the self-study junior
college students who aspire to undergraduate study. It also offers
training courses of various levels in such languages as German,
French, Italian, Japanese and Korean. Normally, it has an
enrollment of over 6,000 students each year. Since 1993, it has
made tremendous contributions to Nanjing and Jiangsu province by
training large numbers of foreign language professionals.
